International Day of Friendship : Every day is a perfectly good day to be designated as a “friendship day,” there is an actual International Friendship Day marked on calendars that has been celebrated in South American countries for many years, and especially in Paraguay, where the first World Friendship Day was proposed back in 1958. The International Day of Friendship is a United Nations (UN) day that promotes the role that friendship plays in promoting peace in many cultures. It is observed on July 30 each year.
The UN has a special day to promote the concept of friendships across diverse backgrounds and cultures. International Friendship Day is a day designed to foster friendships and bridge the gaps between race, color, religion and other factors which keep humans from enjoying friendship with one another.
What Do People Do?
To mark the International Day of Friendship, the UN encourages governments, organizations, and community groups to hold events, activities and initiatives that promote solidarity, mutual understanding and reconciliation.
The International Day of Friendship is a UN observance and not a public holiday.
In 2011, the UN proclaimed the International Day of Friendship with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, and cultures can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The UN wanted for the day to involve young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity.
History Of Friendship Day : In the past, official Friendship Day observations have been held on different dates in different countries, however in 2011 the United Nations declared that the 30th of July would be the official International Friendship Day going forward even though a few countries in Asia still celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday in August every year.
It is interesting to note how different parts of the world observe Friendship Day with different customs, by giving the festival different names and holding it in times unlike that of the actual festival.
For example, National Friendship Day is held on the first Sunday in August, Women’s Friendship Day is on the third Sunday in August, the third week of May is the Old Friends, New Friends Week and the whole of February is designated as the International Friendship Month.
These days, Friendship Day is celebrated with a lot of fanfare and great expenses. Just as in US and several other countries, the festival has been greatly commercialized.
